Wellesley, Sir Henry, 1828 first Baron Cowley (1773-1847),
British diplomat; brother of Duke of Wellington; began his diplomatic career in Stockholm as secretary of legation; 1807 MP; 1808-9 one of the secretaries to the Treasury; 1809 sworn into the privy council; 1809 secretary to the embassy in Spain, later envoy extraordinary, 1811 appointed ambassador; 1812 knighted; 1815 created GCB; 1823-31 ambassador to Vienna; 1835, and 1841-1846 ambassador to Paris.
